Putting a Livelihood Perspective into Practice: Systemic Approach to Rural Development
This guide builds on the use of a sustainable livelihood approach and describes a way to put such an approach into practice. It guides livelihood analysis, appraisal and planning in rural areas with the aim of assisting in the design and re-orientation of development interventions. Such a Systemic Approach to Rural Development (SARD) offers the establishment of a holistic and differentiated understanding of poverty, livelihood patterns and relations between stakeholders in a rural setting. Human Rights and Livelihood Approaches for Poverty Reduction This briefing paper maps the key features of the human rights and livelihood approaches, looking at their foundation, content and contribution to analysing poverty in specific contexts, as well as identifying operational entry points. The two approaches are compared in terms of their principles, entry points, strenghts and weaknesses. Based on this comparison, the authors find that there is considerable scope for combining the approaches - by broadening the SLA to look at power systems and, as a result, address political sustainability through participation and empowerment. At the same time, the SLA helps the HRBA to focus on specific rights and on individual (and sometimes non-formal) contextual settings. The paper further provides some ideas on how the two approaches could be combined, and what could be gained from such a two-pronged approach. |

Using the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework to Understand and Tackle Poverty
Sustainable Livelihoods Frameworks (SLFs) provide a structure for poverty analysis and the design of people-centred development and poverty reduction policies, programmes and projects. Such frameworks are flexible and can be adapted to meet the specific needs of different organisations or different contexts. This briefing note focuses on the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework (developed by DFID) and a version developed by NADEL following extensive collaborative research on rural livelihood systems (RLS).
